The New Room, John Wesley's Chapel

The New Room might have caused a stir when built by Charles and John Wesley in Bristol in 1739 but it is now the oldest Methodist building in the world.

The Wesley brothers were Anglican ministers but from their emphasis on preaching and educating the poor developed a different practice of Christianity that now has 75 million adherents worldwide.

An Allchurches Trust grant contributed to a £4.5m restoration of this beautiful, classically proportioned and galleried New Room and the development of a museum and archive telling the story of Methodism and its Bristol roots.
